Things to do in Gauteng

Gauteng is derived from the Sesotho word meaning “Place of Gold” and Johannesburg is also known as Jozi & Joburg.  Also known as eGoli, derived from the zulu word meaning “Place of Gold”.

The 2nd largest city on the African continent behind the Egyptian city of Cairo.
It was rebuilt 4 times in 1 century.  In other words it transformed from a tented camp to a shanty town to 4 storey edwardian brick buildings to a modern city of skyscrapers.

Provinces

One of 9 provinces of South Africa.
It is surrounded by 4 other provinces therefore land locked.
In addition there are 5 metropolitan regions of Gauteng.
These are Johannesburg, Tshwane (greater Pretoria), Ekurhuleni (East Rand) Sedibeng & West Rand.

Has a vast number of shopping centres, restaurants and pubs.

Places of Interest

Above all you will find The Cradle of Humankind.
It is one of the richest archaeological sites in the world with 40% of the planets human fossils.
Added to that is The Hillbrow Tower.  At 270m it is the tallest building in Africa overlooking the city of Johannesburg.

The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is the largest hospital in the world serving up to 3.5 million people in Johannesburg.

Johannesburg OR Tambo International airport is the busiest airport in Africa.

Pretoria is known as the Jacaranda City due to the trees that colour it purple each spring.

Climate

One of the world’s best climates.
Summer days are warm and wind free however winter days are crisp and clear.
Johannesburg and Pretoria temperatures differ by about 2%.  Pretoria is the warmer of the two.
The rainy season is in summer.
