The Tarkastad Canoe Club is one of the worst, best kept secrets amongst the South African canoeing fraternity. It is linked to the annual Fish River Canoe Marathon.

The club was established after two paddlers on the way through to Cradock, expressed such horror when they discovered that there was no canoe club in the parched town of Tarkastad that they took it upon themselves to encourage a number of the locals to start a club and that is how the club was born.

The unknown river that runs through Tarkastad has been bone dry for centuries which means that it is the job of the Canoe Club to attempt to fill it every year in order for them to set up their one club showdown of the year.

They try to fill the river bed – which is the rugby field – every year for their race and get a couple boats in there and drag them through which always seems to turn out to be a contentious result.
