Kalkfontein Dam Nature Reserve
Located 33 kilometres to the north of Fauresmith and southeast of Koffiefontein, you will find this pretty little nature reserve in the Free State. This remote Reserve of 4500-hectare is a hidden gem.
The dam is a popular fishing spot for yellowfish – both the small and large mouth varieties that are a rare find in most fishing dams. The land that surrounds the dam is too small to support much wildlife, but you will find about 170 species of birds, which is a birders paradise. The dam attracts a good number of terns, greater and lesser flamingos and the South African shelduck. The rufous-eared warbler, Orange River white-eye and the tiny African quail finch are other attractive birds that can be seen in the area.
Braais, slipways and toilets are there for the convenience of anglers and picnickers. There are no shops near the reserve and visitors must bring their own provisions and equipment.
