Nthakeni Bush & River Camp
The area and it’s people
The camp is situated in a tribal trust area bordering the Kruger National Park and Makuya Game Reserve. The local people are very friendly, representing mostly the Shangaan and Venda tribes. As per tribal custom, the local village, Nkotswi, is ruled by a musanda (captain), which in turn form part of the greater Ha-Makuya area, which is ruled by a “greater” chief.
Please treat the people with the necessary respect as the land belongs to them. Guests are most welcome to visit the village and are encouraged to interact with the residents.
Nature
The Pafuri area is an arid area with extremely hot summers and pleasant winters. The camp is nestled on the bank of the Mutale River which runs throughout the year, but might dry up on the surface during long spells of drought. A rich diversity of trees can be seen in and around the camp. Our area is a birder’s paradise, with more than 450 species that has been identified.
The camp
Nthakeni means “Caring for the people”, reflecting both ways: caring for the community and caring for our guests. As the lodge is an important source of job provision, the village people welcomes guests to their area and crime is basically non-existant. Nthakeni Bush & River Camp is first and foremost a camp for nature lovers. We would like our guests to experience the peace and tranquility of the African bush and request that you always consider your fellow guests.
Explore and Experience
The area around the camp can be explored by 4X4 vehicle, hiking or cycling. Please preserve our bush. Always remain cautious as nature can be unpredictable. The Pafuri Gate of the Kruger National Park is 5km from the camp. This northern area is worthwhile visiting. Feel free to ask at reception for advice on recommended routes.
